Up Our Sleeves 2017.01 - Neaux "Fell Off The Deep End"

Posted on April 15th, 2017

Up Our Sleeves is Iron Pier's new blog feature focusing on the material construction and design of the vinyl records and other media we release on our label. We put a lot of time and attention into each release and in this hopefully regular column we're going to take a close look at, and showcase, the physical aspects of many of our releases.

Neaux's debut, Fell Off The Deep End, was originally released by Iron Pier on cassette in late 2016. In early 2017, we remastered the album and re-released it on vinyl and on digital.

The first press was released on two colorways: transparent electric blue vinyl with hot pink splatter in a run of 186 copies, and on transparent coke bottle green vinyl in a run of 291 copies. The pink in the splatter was chosen to mirror the shade of pink used in the outer/inner sleeve designs and on the color vinyl center labels as well as to provide a visual through-line to all the different elements of the vinyl package. The blue vinyl base color was chosen to break from the other, more floral, colors in the outer sleeve and to highlight the pink splatter. The green colorway was chosen because of its similarity to jade green and to channel the green color of the front cover flower stems.

The outer jacket features a photo taken and distorted by the band then updated for the re-release by frequent Iron Pier collaborator Sam Phipps of Iamsam Design. He created a distinctive new take on the original cassette cover art, featuring an all-over halftone screen with cover title text blended and layered into the art.

We manufactured this vinyl record and its packaging in the EU using our friends SOLID MFG. The outer jacket is printed full color CMYK on 300gsm white/white standard carton board stock. Our EU plant used a two-fold box spine on all three sides of the jacket, a technique we really like.

The vinyl record is housed inside an inner printed dust sleeve. When done well, we think a printed inner sleeve can add a really cool feel to a record and we much prefer them over an insert and white paper dust sleeve combo– in fact all Iron Pier vinyl releases since Self Defense Family's Duets have featured a printed inner sleeve. The inner sleeve for the Neaux record was printed on 200gsm offset paper for a thick matte feel. Our plant uses a euro board sleeve design, which often features a thicker stock than typical American paper inner sleeves, with no lip at the loading edge of the sleeve.

The pink of the inner sleeve matches the pink on the outer jacket and the pink on the blue splatter vinyl. The design on the inner sleeve features photos of the band on tour, repeated elements of the cover art, and lyrics/credits. The inner sleeve is top-loading and the outer jacket is side-loading.

We also had black/white inner download cards (not pictured) printed, cut, and inserted into the outer sleeve along with the record and inner sleeve before the whole package was shrinkwrapped, promo stickers applied to the outer front cover, and the records shipped out into the world. These records are now available from our webstore, from the band, and at quality record stores, distros, and online marketplaces.

Other Houses Joins Iron Pier

Posted on February 9th, 2017

We're excited to announce a new addition to the Iron Pier family:

Other Houses is the full-band power-pop project of Brooklyn, NY, singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Morgan Enos. Think Guided By Voices meets early R.E.M. meets Elliott Smith. Their songs are melodic, concise, and subtly barbed. Onstage, Enos is joined by bassist Dave Lucas (Twiga) and drummer Stephen Lee Clark (Field Agent, Deafheaven.)

Check out Other Houses' past discography on Bandcamp, and watch out for more news on their debut release with Iron Pier soon. Other Houses will play NEAUX's record release show February 18 at Trans Pecos.

Neaux's debut "Fell Off The Deep End" Remastered & On Vinyl

Posted on January 11th, 2017

Fell Off The Deep End is the debut full-length from Neaux. Rich in atmosphere and songcraft, Fell Off The Deep End gives a nod to shoegaze, Sonic Youth, and Bl'ast in equal measure. The members - Sierra Kay (Versa Emerge), Nick Fit (Loss Leader, Trash Talk), Ryan Briggs (Have Heart), and Chris X - may have cut their teeth in varied projects, but Fell Off The Deep End's rewarding collision of worlds yields a captivating new sound. There's a weighty crunch to the sound that recalls 90's grunge and alt-rock, yet clear and expressive lead vocals and aggressive lyrical vulnerability ensures fans of Slowdive and PJ Harvey can find space in this music. It's the sound of restless emotional territory, of punk looking inward.

Originally released on cassette in late 2016, Fell Off The Deep End has been remastered in 2017 with new artwork and is up for pre-order now on vinyl, cassette, and digital at ironpier.net, along with exclusive merch.

Vans Girls blog is now premiering a new music video for "Somewhere Up North" as well as a Q&A with Neaux singer Sierra Kay. The video can also be viewed on Youtube.

Neaux will celebrate the proper release of Fell Off The Deep End with a record release show on Saturday February 18th at Trans-Pecos in Ridgewood Queens, NY. More details to follow.

Hollow Sunshine Announce "Coward + Leader + Omega" EP Trilogy for Cassette Store Day

Posted on September 1st, 2016

California-based duo Hollow Sunshine will release a trilogy of EPs, Coward + Leader + Omega, on the Iron Pier record label for Cassette Store Day. Available Saturday October 8th, 2016 this release is a one-time-only cassette pressing limited to 50 units.

The three EPs compiled on this release betray inspirations ranging from the spiritual-minded prog of Popol Vuh to Joni Mitchell’s late-in-the-game experiments in rhythm and atmosphere. The pensive Coward casts a long, paranoid shadow, Leader’s buoyant pop almost seems to defy gravity, and Omega burns the whole script in a psychedelic fever.

This is the first time Coward + Leader + Omega will exist in a physical format. Whether heard together or separately, they demonstrate incredible range from the duo of Reuben Sawyer and Morgan Enos and serve as a new chapter for Hollow Sunshine’s increasingly bold and intriguing body of work.

Coward + Leader + Omega will be available on October 8th at Iron Pier’s webstore and via other online and physical record stores. The label will also be hosting cassette specials for other releases at their webstore for Cassette Store Day: www.ironpier.net
